Empty Car Order Card

Empty cars cost a railroad money.  There are established rules for prompt return of cars.  A fewI of those rules are:

  • Cars must return via the same railroad(s) that delivered them
  • A charge assessed to whichever railroad, on the cars return route, is in possession of the car at midnight each day.
  • If the empty-possessing railroad receives a customer request for an empty that specific car’s type & condition, and the customer is shipping to a destination along or beyond the route the empty would travel, that empty, rather than “your” railroad’s car is delivered to “your” customer.

Empty Car Order Cards can be inserted in front of an “empty” cars waybill to “capture” a car situated in a yard for use before heading back to its home yard.  Another bit of prototypical operations that we can eventually evolve to if we wish.
